Veteran Convicted In DWI Case That Killed 3

September 4, 2011 |

An Iraq war veteran pleaded no contest to charges he was drinking and driving when he ran into a broken down vehicle in the emergency lane of Interstate 39/90/94 last fall.

The 32-year-old man pleaded no contest to all four counts, three of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and one charge of operating while intoxicated, causing injury.

Three University of Minnesota students were killed in the crash. They had pulled over because a rear tire blew out and were addressing the issue.

The man will be sentenced October 28. He faces up to 78 years in prison and a $310,000 fine.
