Charges In Both Crashes That Killed Mother, Son

A West Allis man and a Milwaukee man have been charged in two separate crashes that took the lives of a mother and a son just hours apart.

According to reports, Jesse Steinmetz is accused of ran over and killed the 45-year-old mother about 1 a.m. early last Sunday morning. Steinmetz is facing one felony count of hit-and-run resulting in death after the accident. He was arrested at his house after officials apparently followed a trail of oil leaking from his car.

Hours later, when the woman’s 22-year-old son found out about the incident, he had a 21-year-old Xavier Hughes rush him to a hospital where he thought his mother was being treated. On the way to the hospital, the vehicle crashed and then rolled over, killing the son.

Officials said the vehicle was speeding and was driving up to 90 miles an hour before the accident. The son was ejected and killed in the crash. Hughes, who had a blood alcohol content of .113 two hours after the crash is charged with four felonies, including homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle.
