Bounce House Injuries Rise Dramatically

November 27, 2012 |

A new study published in the journal Pediatrics this week showed the number of injuries occurring in bounce houses are rising at an alarming rate.

According to reports, more than 11,300 children aged 17 and younger were treated for bounce house-related injuries in 2010, which was double the number of injuries in 2008 and 15 times the number of injuries from 1995. Divided equally, it equates to one child every 46 minutes nationally.

The most common injuries included fractures, sprains and strains, followed by head injuries, neck injuries and face injuries. Researchers found most commonly an injury was caused by a fall or a collision with another bouncer. Only about three percent of those injured were hospitalized and more than one-third of the injuries sustained were in children aged five years old and younger.

Additionally, several nonfatal accidents happened last year when bounce house at festivals or fairs collapsed or were lifted by strong wind gusts.

The study pointed out bounce houses use has also increased during that time period, accounting for at least a portion of the increase of injuries. Nearly 40 percent of the injuries occurred at home and almost 55 percent of those injured were male.
