NHTSA Stats: School Buses Safest Transportation To School

October 24, 2012 |

Parents should rest assured as they place their kid’s safety in the hands of the bus drivers each morning because school buses are the safest vehicles out there, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the National Highway Safety Administration.

NHTSA said riding a school bus is statistically seven times safer than riding in another type of vehicle such as a car or a truck. After analyzing statistics, an average of six students are killed yearly in bus crashes, while an average of 12 pedestrian deaths occurred outside the bus.

The same report also found that 69 percent of the total students killed, however, were struck by school buses. Twenty-six percent were killed by other vehicles involved in crashes.

Steps such as arriving early to the bus stop and having children wait for their bus at least five large steps back from the curb. If a student must cross the street, experts recommend students cross at least 10 large steps in front of the school bus to ensure their safety and to make sure the bus driver can see them as they cross.

If you or your loved one has sustained serious injuries in any type of bus accident, it is important to discuss your case with an experienced Wisconsin attorney. Call today for your free, initial consultation.
