WI DOT Releases New Phone App To Help Curb Drunk Driving

March 23, 2013 |

A new phone application released from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is meant to help people determine it they have had too much to drink and drive or if they are sober enough for the ride home.

The new application named “Drive Sober” for smart phones is part of Zero in Wisconsin traffic safety campaign. It includes a blood alcohol estimator, a designated driver selector and a function to help find safe rides home that utilizes the GPS to find nearby taxi, mass transit and designated-driver services.

The application is available for free download. Links for the Apple Store and Google Play are available through Wisconsin DOT’s web site.

The application was launched last weekend in time for St. Patrick’s Day. It does warn it is only an estimation of blood alcohol levels and reminding users that if an officer pulls them over with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or greater, they will still be held responsible.

According to Wisconsin DOT, last year during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday weekend, four people died in Wisconsin traffic accidents.

“This year, if drivers always designate before they celebrate and never get behind the wheel while impaired, we could attain zero traffic deaths,” says State Patrol Major Sandra Huxtable, director of the Bureau of Transportation Safety. “By downloading the new Drive Sober app, motorists can help prevent drunken driving crashes that devastate individuals, families and entire communities.”

If you or a loved one has suffered serious injuries due to any type of drunk driving related accident, you may be entitled to recover damages. Call one of our Wisconsin personal injury attorneys today for your free, initial consultation.
