Drive Safe During Milwaukee’s Rainy Season

June 8, 2015 |

Wet pavement contributes to 1.2 million car accidents in the United States every year. Milwaukee’s rainy season, which typically lasts from April through August or September, creates a five-month window of what can be very dangerous driving conditions. This rainy season, practice these behind-the-wheel safety tips to decrease the chances of a serious collision.

  • Don’t Use Cruise Control
Cruise control is a great tool for driving in dry weather conditions, but it can compromise traction when the pavement is wet. If you’re driving in the rain, your car could lose traction (hydroplane). The best solution to hydroplaning is to gently take your foot off of the accelerator, which is impossible if you’re using cruise control.
  • Leave Enough Space Between Cars
Many drivers assume speeding is generally harmless, but driving over the speed limit in the rain can quickly lead to a crash. If the pavement is damp or slippery, it is imperative to drive cautiously and leave enough space between cars so that, in the case of an emergency, you can slow down with enough time to avoid hitting another vehicle.
  • Turn On Your Headlights
Rain decreases visibility, which heightens the possibility of a traffic collision. If other motorists can’t see you, they might pull out in front of your car and cause an accident. Increase the visibility of your vehicle by always using your headlamps in the rain. Remember this: if your windshield wipers are on, your headlights should be too.
  • What to do if Your Car Skids
If your car starts to skid, take your foot off of the accelerator and continue to turn / look in the direction you want the car to move. Do not hit the brakes or panic. If you are driving cautiously, you should have enough room between your car and other vehicles to regain control without getting into a collision.
