Boy, 4, Killed When Run Over By Snowplow

A four-year-old was killed Tuesday morning when he was accidentally struck by a snow plow as his father plowed their driveway and he played nearby.

According to news reports, 4-year-old Collin Fitzgerald of Star Township, Wis. in St. Croix County was playing in a snow fort his parents had built for him as his father plowed their driveway shortly before noon.

His father reportedly was working on snow that had gathered in front of the garage when he noticed blood on the snow. He got out when he realized the boy was injured. Officials said he attempted to save him and called for help, but the boy suffered massive head trauma and taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Reports said he was run over by the pickup truck.

According to statistics from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, fatal snow plow accidents are overall rare. In the past 21 years, there have been 17 fatal crashes with snowplows in the state and last year there were 59 crashes involving snowplows last year. Due to the size of the trucks though, they can have devastating and fatal results.
