Distracted driving continues to be a deadly problem, not only in Wisconsin, but across the United States. When most people hear of distracted driving, they immediately think of texting or using a smartphone, but it actually encompasses much more than just those actions.
Just last week, three teens died when the vehicle they were in slammed into the back of a semi truck that was stopped on I-94.
According to officials, a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old died on the scene. The driver, also a 17-year-old, died from his injuries yesterday. A fourth passenger received minor injuries.
The Wisconsin State Patrol said the teens were trying to get the attention of another driver who had just passed them. One of the occupants had unbuckled his seat belt to find a paper.
Tragic accidents like this are a reminder that a driver and occupants must always practice safe and engaged driving. According to the U.S. government site, http://www.distraction.gov, in 2010 3,094 people were killed and 416,000 were injured in distracted driving crashes.
The truck driver was uninjured in the accident.
