When we first learn to drive, we are taught that safety is always first. We are told that there are certain things to do before we even start to drive. This is absolutely true, but there are many other things that you must do to keep yourself safe on the road. The fact is, nobody can ever predict when a collision can occur, but we can make sure we are completely prepared in the event we face a crash.
Always Use a Seat Belt
This is one of the first things we are taught in a vehicle. Always put your seat belt on. If a crash does occur, you need to secure yourself to prevent serious damages as much as possible. You can still be susceptible to an injury, but you can feel better knowing that the damage may be lessened by your actions.
Keep Your Phone Down
Distracted driving is one of the most common causes of car crashes. Make sure you keep your phone away and only pull over if you need to answer it. Looking down at your phone for five seconds while traveling at 55 miles per hour is enough to travel the distance of a football field. A lot can go wrong in that time.
Follow Traffic Signals
Take the traffic signals seriously, they are meant to keep drivers safe. Any time someone speeds, runs a red light or doesn’t follow the laws, they increase the risk of causing a traffic collision.
Pay Attention to Blind Spots
When changing lanes, you are supposed to make sure you check your side and rearview mirrors, also taking a brief moment to look over and ensure you can change lanes safely. When someone fails to check their blind spots, it can cause a serious collision that may go beyond the two initial vehicles.
Watch for Negligent Drivers
As much precaution as we take to protect ourselves, there is still the potential of a crash due to other drivers on the road. We can’t predict the actions of others, but you can watch others to have some kind of idea. For instance, if you notice a driver swerving while traveling on the road, this may mean they are intoxicated or checking their phone. Avoid these drivers as much as possible.
